On 5 December, the EPP-CoR Group was pleased to welcome Dubravka Šuica, European Commission Vice-President responsible for Democracy and Demography, to an EPP Local Dialogue in Brussels. The event looked into what the EU can do for its citizens to transform ‘brain drain’ into ‘brain gain’ – an opportunity for both the receiving communities and the places of origin.
The event was hosted by Emil Boc, Mayor of Cluj-Napoca, CoR rapporteur on Brain drain in the EU: addressing the challenge at all levels.
Joined by MEP Esther de Lange, Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor of Warsaw (EPP/PL) and MEP Isabel Benjumea Benjumea, the speakers discussed local and regional actions to tackle brain drain, while identifying needs and resources to cope with the phenomenon also at national and EU levels.
“I am here to establish a long-term cooperation with you to support cities and regions in tackling brain drain. Only by coordinating and integrating our efforts at various levels can we succeed, no one can do it alone,” Commissioner Šuica said.
