Noel Formosa (MT/EPP), member of the European Committee of the Regions, participated in the 14th meeting of the CoR–UK Contact Group, held in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 19–20 October.
The two-day meeting focused on the future of EU–UK relations, the impact of Brexit, cross-border cooperation, trade and education, and the importance of strengthening ties between local and regional communities.
Reflecting on the discussions, Formosa said: “Brexit may be the strongest evidence of the European Union’s success. Sometimes, we only realise the true value of belonging when we experience the consequences of leaving.”
He stressed that Europe is more than an economic union, describing it as a project of peace, solidarity and shared opportunity.
The programme also included a visit to Black Mountain Shared Space, highlighting the contribution of EU PEACE programmes to reconciliation and community cooperation in Northern Ireland.
