The European Committee of the Regions’ Commission for Natural Resources (NAT) has appointed Anthony Chircop (MT/EPP) as rapporteur for its upcoming opinion on the EU Strategy on resilient, prosperous and liveable coastal communities, adopted by the European Commission on 10 June 2026. The Strategy addresses the economic, environmental and social challenges facing coastal communities, with a focus on prosperity, resilience and liveability.
Chircop will bring to the opinion the experience of Malta’s Eastern Region, where seven of its twelve local councils are coastal and where a significant share of Malta’s tourism and accommodation activity is concentrated. “Malta’s Eastern Region encompasses a great part of Malta’s most popular and sought-after coastline. Seven of the twelve Local Councils forming the Region are coastal, and these areas have become preferred destinations for both local and foreign residents and visitors. Our experience can help identify good practices and, where necessary, corrective measures for the benefit of similar coastal territories across the EU,” said Chircop.
The CoR opinion will examine the Strategy from the perspective of Europe’s local and regional authorities, including issues linked to the blue economy, climate resilience, infrastructure, tourism and coastal governance. The Commission’s Strategy explicitly emphasises tailored, locally led solutions reflecting the different realities of Europe’s coastal communities.
