But now Ukraine looks forward to rebuilding key infrastructure, schools, hospitals, roads and houses, so that millions of refugees can return to a safe home. Beyond massive financial support from international and EU donors, the Ukrainian partners are asking for know-how, best available technologies and expertise. We are together with you, dear Ukrainian friends, to offer practical support in the recovery and reconstruction efforts of your country." Olgierd Geblewicz, EPP-CoR Group President and President of Western Pomerania made these remarks at the launch of the European Alliance of cities and regions for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Vitali Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv and President of the Association of Ukrainian Cities, said that the war is not just against Ukraine but against Europe and democracy. He described it a senseless war. "We were and are a peaceful country but we must defend our right to build a modern European country. I would like to that the European cities and regions for your support in hosting our citizens."
Oleksiy Chernyshov, Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine said that Ukrainian communities and regions face new challenges. "In order to overcome these challenges, we need European regional development projects. Despite the war we are still working on the Ukrainian decentralisation and structural reforms. Municipalities play a significant role in the recovery and reconstruction plan of our country."
Oleksandr Markushyn, Mayor of Irpin said "The town of Irpin has always aspired to be part of the European Union. It is difficult for me to talk to you about the war but it is even more difficult to see how my country and my town are being destroyed by this terrible war. I am asking for your support to my town to become a pilot project in the reconstruction of Ukrainian communities."
Hanna Zdanowska, Mayor of Łódź said that involvement of all European cities and regions in humanitarian help to Ukraine since the beginning of the war exceeded all imaginations. Łódź welcomed over 150 thousand Ukrainian refugees. She appealed for cooperation to contribute in the reconstruction of Ukraine. "Now, it is time to make a step forward and to start working on the new Marshal plan for Ukraine. Only with joint initiatives and our European solidarity we will be able to fully help Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. We have to integrate power – experience, knowledge and sources - of all European Local and Regional Authorities (LRAs) for the sake of Ukraine’s future and freedom."
Harald Sonderegger, Vice President of the Congress and President of the State Parliament of Vorarlberg said "We are happy of this initiative. The congress is ready to join the alliance to continue supporting Ukrainian cities and regions. Ukrainian LRAs need our support as they continue to work in a horrendous situation."
