European villages, cities and regions gathered at the European Committee of the Regions for the #EPPLocalDialogue as part of the 2024 European Week of Regions and Cities. Key regional leaders and elected politicians came together to exchange successful practices, strategies, and innovations aimed at sustainable development, economic growth, and social inclusion.

Representatives from various regions shared the unique initiatives and local projects that are driving progress in their respective areas:

  • Pablo Fernández López, Secretary General for Employment Support, Self-Employment and Social Economy in Galicia highlighted the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, which has supported over 2,600 projects and led to the creation of 180 new companies. “Our policies are aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs and fostering sustainable economic growth,” said Fernández López.
  • Ricardo Rio, Mayor of Braga, showcased his city’s commitment to sustainability, particularly through investment in public transport. “More than 50% of our bus fleet is electric, and we have expanded pedestrian areas and bike lanes to create a greener, more accessible city,” Rio shared.
  • Francisca Ramis Pons, Director General for Institutional and Parliamentary Relations for the Government of the Balearic Islands presented a micro-credit program that equips young people with skills in AI and the energy sector. This initiative helps address the challenges of the modern labor market by supporting youth training and upskilling.
  • Vitaliy Hamanyuk, a young elected politician from Ukraine, discussed his city’s innovative approach to renewable energy, including a municipal healthcare facility that is fully energy-independent and generates surplus electricity. “Our hospital’s solar panels are a model for sustainability." He also stated "We are open to new twinning partnerships with European cities”.
  • Sari Rautio, from Hämeenlinna City Council, emphasized the value of twinning agreements to foster international cooperation. “Our city has twinned with both Sumy in Ukraine and Celle in Germany to share resources and knowledge for mutual benefit,” she stated.

YEPs also stressed the importance of inclusivity in politics and the economy. Lorenca Bejko called for legislative reforms in Albania to ensure minority representation in Parliament, while Jose Luis Polo addressed depopulation challenges in his region. Polo proposed a civic initiative program aimed at revitalizing local communities and reversing demographic decline.

The dialogue highlighted that every European region brings unique talents and resources to the table. By building on these strengths, local governments can create sustainable growth, enhance citizen welfare, and tackle global challenges such as climate change and labor market shifts.
