Caci and Markkula appointed Rapporteurs

The EPP-CoR will be preparing the opinion of European cities and regions on two key proposals of the European Commission.

Occupational safety and health strategy

Sergio Caci, Mayor of Montalto di Castro was appointed as CoR rapporteur for the Occupational safety and health (OSH) strategy. In his first reaction Caci said "I am pleased that my colleagues from SEDEC and the political groups have chosen me as rapporteur for this important and current opinion. I will do my utmost to bring the best possible opinion to the European Committee of the Regions."

EU OSH legislation is essential to protect the health and safety of the almost 170 million workers in the EU. The new 2021-2027 OSH framework sets out the key priorities and actions necessary for improving workers’ health and safety over the coming years in the context of the post-pandemic world, marked with green and digital transitions, economic and demographic challenges and the changing notion of a traditional workplace environment.

 

European Missions

Markku Markkula, Chair of the Espoo City Board and President of the Helsinki Region was appointed as CoR Rapporteur for the Implementation Plans of the Horizon Missions. In his first reaction, Markkula said "EU Missions create huge opportunities for all cities and regions. This is a real bottom-up approach. Our time to act is now: public and private partners together. Let's use European partnerships by picking up an interest area from the five key themes."

This will be an opportunity for local and regional authorities to co-design these five and future Horizon Europe missions. The five missions are:

  1. Adaptation to Climate Change: support at least 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030;
  2. Cancer: working with Europe's Beating Cancer Plan to improve the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030 through prevention, cure and solutions to live longer and better;
  3. Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030;
  4. 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030;
  5. A Soil Deal for Europe: 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils by 2030.
