EPP-CoR member and President of Galicia elected President of Partido Popular

“I congratulate Alberto Feijóo for his election as President of Partido Popular (PP). I am convinced that with his experience as President of Galicia, leadership and vision, he will write a new chapter for PP and Spain.” Olgierd Geblewicz, President of the EPP-CoR Group made these remarks during the 20th National Congress of PP held in Seville, Andalusia.

Addressing the Congress for the last time as President of a Region, Feijóo said that the business model of EPP-led regions was to lower taxes and improve public services including education and health services. Addressing the Congress was also, JuanMa Moreno Bonilla, President of Andalusia and EPP-CoR member who explained how his government reduced taxes and bureaucracy whilst eliminating corruption that was tarnishing the name of the region notwithstanding challenges including the pandemic, drought, the socialist government and the war in Ukraine.

Geblewicz held a number of bilateral meetings including with Feijóo during which meeting they discussed the role of regions in management of EU funds and the latest developments in Ukraine. Present for the meeting was also MEP Esteban Gonzales Pons (Vice President of the EPP Group in the European Parliament). Geblewicz also met Moreno Bonilla. They discussed the need to boost European defense and energy autonomy while ensuring affordable energy prices for citizens. Geblewicz thanked Moreno Bonilla for his active role at the CoR in particular for his work on the ‘Long-term vision for rural areas’ and ‘Climate Law’. With respect to the situation in Ukraine, Geblewicz said that the situation in Ukraine had resulted in a different forms of migration with most people arriving in his region being women and children. He also spoke on the challenge to offer social support to those in need.

The 20th National Congress of PP was attended by various members of the EPP family including Antonio López-Istúriz White (EPP Secretary General), Manfred Weber Chairman of the EPP group in the EP) and Margaritis Schinas (Vice-President of the European Commission).
