In the EU Annual Report on the State of Regions and Cities, 91% of EU citizens ask for an increase of the influence of local and regional authorities in policy making. We can't disappoint them. Let's build together a strong democratic European future. Olgierd Geblewicz, President of EPP-CoR Group and President of the West Pomeranian Region made these remarks during the opening of the European Week of Regions and cities.
Addressing local and regional elected representatives during a debate on 'Regions and cities building Europe's democratic future' with Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Geblewicz said "The challenge of keeping democracy everywhere on the map of 🇪the EU is a huge one, especially before the 2024 EU elections. Our cities and regions need 3 levels of protection: politics close to citizens; tangible solidarity on which they can count and education and civic engagement."
When discussing how Cohesion policy can lead to a fairer and stronger Europe, Sari Rautio, Member of Hämeenlinna City Council, member of the European Committee of the Regions, and EPP-CoR Group said "Europe is about people. I want Cohesion policy to give strength to all women, mothers and grandmothers to take care of our children. We need to ensure that no matter what happens or the crisis that may arrive, the children that represent our future are safe."
During a debate on the state of Europe's regions and cities, Ricardo Rio, Mayor of Braga, member of the European Committee of the Regions and EPP-CoR Group emphasised the need of further support from the EU. "Braga recorded a huge growth in recent years, boosting investment and innovation, creating jobs and attracting talent that supported the highest population growth in Portugal. The sustainability of the Braga Model strongly depends on further support from the European Union on aspects such as mobility and the pursue of the sustainable development goals."
During the same debate, Michelle Glanzner, Local Councillor from Einhausen, member of the CoR's Young Elected Politicians programme on behalf of the EPP-CoR Group said "The voice of all cities and regions, no matter their size, should be take into account when shaping EU and national legislation. There is an urgent need for action and adaptation to reality. Cities and regions are the places where the realities of Europe happen."
