EPP-CoR members have called for investment in research into extraction and processing of raw materials, a functioning circular economy, and ensuring a level playing field in the global market during a discussion on a CoR Opinion on the Action Plan on Critical Raw Materials.
Thomas Schmidt, Minister for Regional Development, Free State of Saxony said "The supply of critical raw materials plays a key role for Europe as a business location. I welcome the fact that the European Commission has recognised the importance of this issue and wants to ensure long-term supply. The CoR's opinion on the Action Plan identifies important aspects with the objectives of reducing the consumption of raw materials and increase recycling. However, the safe supply of critical raw materials also involves developing our own sources of raw materials. It is important to me that we in Europe make new mining possible again. We have our own resources and know-how - also in Saxony. European research into the extraction and processing of raw materials together with a functioning circular economy are the key to a secure supply of critical raw materials."
Mark Speich, Secretary of State for Federal, European and International Affairs for the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia and CIVEX chair said “We know that the demand for critical raw materials will continue to increase in the future, and by this we will become more and more dependent on third countries. The European Union needs a strategic approach on critical raw materials: building diversified value chains, reducing raw material dependencies, strengthening the circular economy, promoting innovation and ensuring a level playing field in the global market. Ultimately, the European Union must strengthen domestic sourcing of raw materials and diversify imports from third countries. I am convinced that the regions represent an essential level for achieving the European Union's raw material strategy goals.”
