REGIONAL AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES : THE DRIVING FORCE OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION

The European People's Party (EPP) Group at the Committee of the Regions was invited by the President of the Veneto Region and CoR member, Giancarlo Galan.  The following also attended the meeting: Italian Minister for European affairs, Rocco Buttiglione, Chairman of the EPP-DE Group at the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, Secretary-General of the EPP, Antonio Lopez, President of the Lombardy Region, Roberto Formigoni, former CoR president, Jos Chabert, and European Convention

SAFETY & SECURITY IN EUROPEAN CITIES

This year’s annual extraordinary meeting of the EPP Group in the CoR is to be held in Athens, Greece on 15 October.

On the invitation of Ms. Bakoyannis, Mayor of Athens, the EPP Group of the Committee of the Regions will meet to discuss how to best face the challenges of safety and security in European cities.

''The Athens Olympic Games were staged in a secure, safe and at the same time festive environment. The city of Athens provides the platform to discuss best practices in ensuring safety and security for our citizens'' said Ms Bakoyannis.

EUROREGIONS: BRINGING CITIZENS TOGETHER - Exchanging best practice on cross-border co-operation

At its extraordinary meeting in Dubrovnik on 2nd June 2005, hosted by its Mayor, Ms. Dubravka Suica, the European People Party’s Group in the Committee of the Regions calls on border regions and local authorities to intensify their cooperation efforts with neighbouring regions both within the Union, taking advantage of a new geographical reality and bringing citizens closer together, and outside the Union as a means to build bridges and to promote European values based on common cultural, social, economic and political aims.

MIGRATION & IMMIGRATION Regions and Cities on the front line

Isidoro Gottardo, President of the European People Party’s (EPP) Group in the Committee of the Regions (CoR) believes that "the EU needs a more organised and coordinated European policy on migration and immigration, involving Member States and cooperating with local and regional authorities". In the framework of the EPP Group in CoR´s annual extraordinary meeting in Madrid on 27th October 2006, he also called for the sharing of responsibilities and financial burdens to be an integral part of any European approach.

A regional perspective for the future European maritime policy

The EPP Group of the Committee of the Regions of the EU met today in Funchal at the invitation of Alberto Joao Jardim, President of Madeira Region, to debate with Joe Borg, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the regional perspective of the future EU maritime policy and the EPP contribution to the Green Paper defining new measures and action in this field.
