Food means nothing to those who have plenty and everything to those who have not

The universal right to quality, healthy food was at the heart of a meeting of the EPP Group in the European Committee of the Regions, within the auspices of EXPO Milano, today. The 100 mayors, regional presidents and local councillors from the EPP family were united that food provides the energy for life and that it is a pre-condition to live in dignity. Michael Schneider, President of the EPP Group in the CoR, signed the Milan Charter, a political document that calls on every citizen, association, company and institution to assume their responsibility in ensuring that future generations can enjoy the right to food, on behalf of the political Group. “This meeting is the opportunity to gather local and regional experiences, which will feed into the EPP Group resolution and our contribution to the Charter of Milan. I hope this will be the legacy of EXPO and become the basic reference point for the work of local and regional authorities on policies related to food and energy” underlined Raffaele Cattaneo, President of the Regional Council of Lombardy. Luca Del Gobbo, Chair of the Nuovo Centrodestra political group in Lombardy Council, and Claudio Pedrazzini, Chair of the Forza Italia political group in the Lombardy Council, supported the debates and stressed the need for the EPP family to unite in order to find solutions to global challenges. Highlighting the need for constant innovation in the food and energy sectors, Markku Markkula, President of the European Committee of the Regions said: “Farmers today need an improved knowledge capacity based on the reality on the ground. This should be complimented by stronger links between scientists, academics and practitioners. And last but not least, we need better partnerships at local, national and international levels, which are supported by the EU financing systems” After adopting the EPP/CoR Milan declaration, which underlines the need for innovation in the food and energy sectors at the local and regional level, the EPP Group in the CoR made an official visit to the Italian and EU pavilions at EXPO.
